Kyphosis Bracing Treatment

Specialist Kyphosis Bracing

For Children, Teenagers and Adults

Expert kyphosis bracing can help improve posture, reduce pain and, in growing children and teenagers, may help prevent progression or reduce the spinal deformity. At Braced for Scoliosis, we provide personalised, evidence-based treatment using the Kyphologic® brace, individually designed to match each patient’s spinal shape. Whether you have Scheuermann’s kyphosis or postural kyphosis, we’ll assess your condition and advise whether bracing is an appropriate treatment option.

Personalised, Evidence-Based Bracing for Kyphosis

If you or your child have been diagnosed with kyphosis, early intervention can make a significant difference.

We provide specialist kyphosis bracing designed to improve posture, reduce pain and – when there is growth potential and it is possible – to reduce the deformity or stop further progression. Using the Kyphologic® brace design developed by renowned scoliosis and spinal deformity specialist Dr Hans-Rudolf Weiss, treatment is tailored to the individual and their specific spinal shape.

Whether you have been diagnosed with Scheuermann’s kyphosis or postural kyphosis, we can assess your condition and advise whether bracing may be appropriate.

In Detail

What Is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is an excessive forward curvature of the upper spine, creating a rounded or hunched appearance of the back.
Whilst a gentle curve in the thoracic spine is normal, a larger curve can affect posture, appearance, comfort and confidence. In some cases, kyphosis may also lead to back pain, muscle fatigue and reduced spinal function.
Many people assume that a rounded posture is simply caused by slouching. However, there are different types of kyphosis, and understanding the cause is important when considering treatment.

Types of Kyphosis

Scheuermann’s Kyphosis

Scheuermann’s kyphosis is a structural condition that develops during growth. Changes within the vertebrae cause the spine to curve forwards more than normal, resulting in a rigid kyphosis that cannot simply be corrected by standing up straight.

Without appropriate management, the curve may continue to progress during growth.

Postural Kyphosis

Postural kyphosis is often more flexible and is typically related to posture, muscle imbalance and movement patterns.

Although usually less severe than Scheuermann’s kyphosis, postural kyphosis can still affect confidence, comfort and quality of life. Treatment may include a combination of bracing, posture correction strategies and specific exercises.

When growth has finished and the individual is a fully matured adult, the aim of the treatment is to improve posture and to balance the curves, so that the risk of progression is reduced, and to reduce any pain which may be present. At this stage it is not possible to affect the Cobb angle, merely maintain the bony shape.

Can Kyphosis Be Treated Without Surgery?

In many cases, yes.

For growing children and teenagers, bracing can be an effective non-surgical treatment option. During growth, treatment may help guide spinal development, improve spinal alignment and prevent further progression of the curve. In some cases, remodelling of the vertebrae may also be possible.

Adults may also benefit from specialist bracing, particularly where pain, postural difficulties or spinal imbalance are present.

The earlier treatment begins, the greater the opportunity to achieve meaningful correction.

Evidence-Based Bracing for Kyphosis

Modern research has shown that specialist kyphosis bracing can achieve significant correction in appropriately selected patients, particularly when treatment begins during growth.

We use the Kyphologic® brace design, developed specifically for the treatment of thoracic kyphosis. Unlike older, bulkier brace designs, the Kyphologic® brace is lightweight, low-profile and individually manufactured to match the patient’s anatomy.

Research has demonstrated that achieving a good in-brace correction is strongly associated with improved long-term outcomes. For growing children and adolescents, bracing can help guide spinal growth, improve sagittal alignment and reduce the risk of further progression.

How Does a Kyphologic® Brace Work?

The Kyphologic® brace uses a specialised three-point pressure system designed to reduce excessive thoracic curvature and encourage a more balanced spinal position.

Each brace is custom-made using detailed body measurements and is designed to apply corrective forces at specific points along the spine. The aim is to promote thoracic extension, improve posture and reduce the forward rounding associated with kyphosis.

The brace is lightweight and discreet beneath clothing, making it easier to wear during normal daily activities.

Treatment aims to:

  • Improve sagittal balance
  • Reduce progression of the kyphosis
  • Improve posture and body alignment
  • Reduce pain and muscular fatigue
  • Improve cosmetic appearance
  • Support long-term spinal health
Kyphosis Bracing for Children and Teenagers

Children and adolescents often achieve the greatest benefit from kyphosis bracing because their spines are still growing.

When treatment is started at the appropriate stage of growth, the brace can help guide spinal development and, in some cases, encourage remodelling of the vertebrae themselves. This means that meaningful structural improvements may be achieved alongside postural correction.

Early assessment is particularly important for children diagnosed with Scheuermann’s kyphosis, as progression can occur during growth.

Kyphosis Bracing for Adults

Whilst adults cannot achieve the same vertebral remodelling seen in growing children, many still benefit significantly from specialist bracing. For adults, treatment focuses on improving posture, reducing pain, improving spinal balance and providing support for daily activities. Many patients report reduced fatigue and improved comfort following treatment.

Bracing may also be combined with physiotherapy and posture-specific exercises to maximise outcomes.

Your treatment journey begins with a detailed assessment.

This includes reviewing your medical history, examining your posture and spinal alignment, and assessing any available imaging.

If bracing is recommended, a custom brace will be designed specifically for you following a 3 dimensional scan of your torso. Follow-up appointments allow us to monitor progress, make adjustments where required and support you throughout treatment.

Every patient is different, and treatment plans are tailored to individual goals, age, growth potential and curve severity.

Why Choose Braced for Scoliosis?

  • Honest, evidence-based advice
  • Custom-made corrective braces
  • A supportive and patient-centred approach

This case was treated with a Gensingen brace.

Can a brace correct kyphosis?

In many cases, a brace can significantly improve spinal alignment and help prevent progression. Results depend on factors such as age, skeletal maturity and curve severity.

How many hours per day does a kyphosis brace need to be worn?

This varies between patients. Following assessment, a personalised wear schedule will be recommended based on your age, diagnosis and treatment goals.

Is a kyphosis brace uncomfortable?

Modern brace designs are considerably lighter and more comfortable than traditional braces. Most patients adapt well after an initial adjustment period.

Do adults benefit from kyphosis bracing?

Yes. Although adults cannot achieve vertebral remodelling, many experience improvements in posture, comfort and pain levels.

Clinical Evidence

The Kyphologic® brace is supported by published clinical research demonstrating favourable outcomes for appropriately selected patients with Scheuermann’s kyphosis and other forms of hyperkyphosis. Braced for Scoliosis follows an evidence-based approach, combining specialist assessment, bespoke brace design and ongoing monitoring throughout treatment.
