The Process

Starting Scoliosis Back Treatment

A Gensingen Brace used for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis differs hugely from the typical ‘Boston’ style of bracing that is widely available in the UK known to be compressive, bulky, uncomfortable and non-corrective.

When you decide to support your child with a Gensingen Brace, we will support you every step of the way. From sizing, manufacture and fitting to afterward and ongoing support.

What happens at the initial appointment?

First your child will need to attend a fitting appointment which takes between 1 and a half hours to 2 hours, the brace then takes 7 – 10 days to manufacture. Several adjustments will need to be made to the brace to ensure optimum comfort and function.

Visual Assessment

We will observe any curve(s), the shoulders, hips, head, pelvis, knees, ankles, feet-from front, back and sides.

Physical Assessment

This assessment is to determine flexibility of curve and potential for correction.

Assessment of Imaging

We require an x-ray or EOS scan (PA Scoliosis Standing X-ray) which shows the full spine from back to front and is no longer than 8 weeks old (unbraced x-ray image).

Clinical Photos

Photos are taken from multiple angles in relaxed stance. These are used for assessment of curve pattern and monitoring progress.

3D Body Scan

A full body scan image.

Overview

We will then provide a comprehensive overview of our recommended treatment and expected outcomes.

Why a Gensingen?

The GBW (Gensingen) brace actively reduces the curvature by off-loading the spinal bones three dimensionally to change their shape and alignment. This will reduce the Cobb angle or stop progression of the curves whilst growth completes. Bracing can also help with pain management, improve cosmetic appearance, and can also reduce the likelihood of surgery.
