Sally and Debs Join Forces for Enhanced Scoliosis Care

Sally of Braced for Scoliosis, the UK’s most experienced Gensingen brace provider, has recently relocated offices to share a space with Schroth Therapist Debs Turnbull. Their collaboration, which has been evolving since 2017, brings a unique opportunity for individuals navigating the challenges of adolescent and early onset scoliosis.

In the conservative management of scoliosis, the correct treatment depends on the severity of the curve, the age of the patient along with psychological factors. It may be appropriate to use PSSE (Schroth physiotherapy) only. If the curve progresses, then brace treatment may also be indicated. The likelihood of progression is also an important consideration. See table below:

Incidence (risk) of progression can be calculated according to the formula by Lonstein and Carlson (1984). According to the indication guidelines (Weiss et al. 2008) we have to distinguish between an-Indication for observation only (Incidence (risk) of progression-40%),-Indication for physiotherapy (Incidence (risk) of progression 40-60%),-indication for bracing (Incidence (risk) of progression 60% and more); The average patient from the majority of the papers on physical therapy found in Table 1 have no indication for treatment but for observation, only (blue spots). Debs and Sally have joined forces to be able to tailor the treatment to what is most clinically appropriate. We offer joint assessment sessions for those people who feel they may need input from both specialities.

The joint sessions hold significant value, particularly for those recently diagnosed with scoliosis. When it’s not yet clear whether physiotherapy alone or a scoliosis back brace will be the optimal approach, having Sally and Debs together for this discussion provides a holistic perspective. This collaboration ensures that the best possible treatment plan is crafted for each unique case.
